Amy Sherman-Palladino, the creator of Gilmore Girls, is back with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a new show streaming on Amazon Prime. And it’s good.
Set in 1958, this dramedy focuses on Miriam “Midge” Maisel, played by Rachel Brosnahan. She had all she ever wanted, from a husband she loves to two kids to a snazzy apartment on New York’s Upper West Side. It all changes one night when her husband leaves her and she finds she has talent she never knew she had – stand up comedy.
The dialogue is smart, quick, and funny – just as you would expect from Amy Sherman-Palladino.
I love the combination of fantastic period details from the 1950s. That said, I have a hard time with the sexism that was so prevalent at that time. Sherman-Paladino is just the woman to tackle it head on, and elicit laughs in the process.
The combination of that with a story about a strong woman really finding her voice, with the help of another strong woman, her manager Susie played by Alex Borstein, is really fascinating to me.
Brosnahan’s performance is great, and the supporting actors are delightful. As Sherman-Palladino has done in the past, she’s created a cast of quirky characters that are both imperfect and interesting, if not endearing. I’m especially partial to Tony Shalhoub as Midge’s father.
And I love that, like Gilmore Girls, it’s a story about women that men enjoy, too. My husband watched the premier with me and we both liked it, and I think he laughed harder at the second episode than I did. (True confession: He was the one who heard about the show and suggested it.) He’s excited to see more, as am I.
This is definitely an adult show. Common Sense Media recommends it for kids 15+, but even then, there’s a lot to discuss. The first show included bare breasts, sexual references and strong language. That said, one of those references makes me laugh just thinking about it.
That said, for grown-ups and mature teens, this is a solid option for some winter watching. And good news – Amazon has already green lighted the second season Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
