5 films for a Winter Olympics-themed family movie night

Table of Contents

The Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, will soon begin. Here are some Winter Olympic-themed movie night suggestions that will help get you and your family in the spirit to go for the gold!

Cool Runnings
Rated PG

“I’m feeling very Olympic today” is one of the many quotable quotes from this film about the Jamaican bobsled team. This John Candy film from 1993 is rated PG and has a lot of great messages and laughs for the whole family, and is fun for those of us who remember the Games in Calgary, Canada.

Keep an eye out for the Nigerian women’s bobsled team in PyeongChang. They’re the first-ever Africans to compete in the sport at the Olympics. You can read more about them here.

Eddie the Eagle
Rated PG-13

This film was out just a few years ago and is the newest one the list. This inspiring story of the British ski jumper (played by Taron Egerton) will have you cheering, and possibly jumping, though not quite as high or as far. And it’ll motivate you to reach for your goals and overcome any obstacles.

Also, it’s entirely possible I cheer for Hugh Jackman in any film, no matter what role he’s playing. Can you blame me?

Given the language, this one is better for tweens and teens.

Miracle
Rated PG

The Miracle on Ice is one of the most wonderful moments in Winter Olympics history. This movie starring Kurt Russell of how the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team defeated the Soviet Union and brought home the gold in hockey is good family viewing and full of exciting hockey scenes.

It also provides a bit of perspective for kids about the Cold War, something that they never experienced.

Lindsay Vonn: In the Moment
Not Rated, Common Sense Media says there is one F-word

This 2011 documentary on this renown athlete who will be competing at PyeongChang is a perfect choice. It’s an hour long, so a good choice if you’re needing a shorter option.

It gives a first-hand view of the determination and dedication required to make the podium. And the fact that she’s been doing that for the six plus years since they made this movie is just mind-blowing.

The Cutting Edge
Rated PG

Two words, my friends: Toe pick.

No one will ever say that better than Moira Kelly, star of this figure skating movie from 1992. Some consider it a guilty pleasure. I, however, feel no guilt.

For die hard fans, there are three sequels, but as a purist, this original is the best.

What movies would you add to the Winter Olympics-themed family movie night list?
