Review of our family vacation photo shoot with Flytographer

Table of Contents

Remember the Mom Stays in the Picture movement started by my friend, Allison Slater Tate, with this essay in 2012? I love the idea of documenting for kids that we moms really were there, and that at some point in the future, they’ll want to look back and see us.

That’s tough for me, though, because I have T-rex arms and regularly fail at selfies, and some occasions call for more than selfies. On our recent family trip to New York City, I wanted to get some really good photos. I know that our days of family vacations are numbered, and to me, travel photos are the best keepsakes. We used Flytographer for our vacation photo shoot and loved it.

Review of Flytographer for our family vacation photo shoot

* The photos are incredible souvenirs.

Let’s get right to the chase: Our pictures turned out really well. Looking at them makes me happy and transports me right back to Central Park in New York City where we took them. They’re the best souvenirs I could have hoped for.

I love that most of the shots are natural, and a few are posed. All of them are a lot classier than the Statue of Liberty rubber ducky that grabbed my daughter’s attention, and I’m guessing will be nearer and dearer to our hearts, too. And yes, I’m in them.

Our experience using Flytographer for a family photo shoot in Central Park on our trip to New York City

* Our photographer was awesome.

You can look at the photographers in each city, read a little about them, and see some of their images before selecting who you think is a good fit for you. Johnny was our photographer, and he was really fantastic and so friendly. We all liked him and he did a great job of making us comfortable, something that’s not easy for me when a camera is involved. He also imparted valuable life advise to my daughter. We feel fortunate to have gotten to meet him.

* They were fantastically flexible.

The day of our scheduled shoot it was raining. We’re talking torrential downpour. Not exactly photo-friendly weather. We were there on a short trip and were booked solid the following day. I worried, but needn’t have. Johnny was great about working with our tight schedule and made the last minute change totally doable.

* Knowledge of location is so key.

Local knowledge is key, and it had been decades since I’d been to Central Park. Johnny, however, knew it like the back of his hand. He had great ideas of where to go and what would work where. His combo of talent and knowledge created great shots that we never would have thought to get on our own.

* It took the pressure off the rest of the vacation photo taking.

Vacations are big events in my world, and I admit that I’m often thinking about getting great pictures to commemorate our travels as we are on the go. It was nice to know that we had this set so that I didn’t have to worry about getting perfect shots everywhere. I knew that I could trust our Flytographer professional and just have fun doing my amateur iPhone pics with far less pressure than usual.

* They made the advance work really easy.

Speaking of no pressure, Flytographer was really easy to work with. They hit that sweet spot of being professional but still fun. There was a Goldilocks amount of communication –  not too much or too little. It was just right. I had all the info I needed, including Johnny’s contact info and location details.

* Flytographer is crazy fast.

Good things come to those who wait, or those who use Flytographer. You get your photos by email within five days of your shoot. That’s “quite likely to be in your inbox before you’re even home” speed.

Flytographer is in 200 cities around the world, so chances are that they are where you’ll be on your next vacation. Give them a shot.
